"Is this the best defense investment America has ever made?
America has spent slightly over 5% of its annual defense budget to destroy over 50% of Russia’s conventional warfare capabilities without losing a single American soldier.
Honestly, it’s probably an even better investment than that. The thing is, the US did not build a bunch of weapons to send to Ukraine, it sent weapons that had already been built and were probably just going to sit idle on a bunch of military bases anyway. The massive size of the US military budget is, in many ways, little more than a jobs program, subsidizing and propping up industries and states that would otherwise collapse without a constant stream of government dollars. As a result, the US frequently buys weapon systems and vehicles that it otherwise does not need (ex. generals have gone before Congress on multiple occasions to tell them they have more than enough M1 Abrams tanks, only to have Congress up the orders anyway), which then just sort of sit around doing nothing.
Now though? The US is actually getting something out of its investment besides just a bunch of random factory jobs in Ohio or Indiana, i.e., the obliteration of the military capabilities of one of its biggest geopolitical rivals, all without having to risk a single American life to do it. Every Cold War-era US President would be doing cartwheels right about now…"
